The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as the LDS or the Mormons, is a denomination of the Christian faith. Founded by Joseph Smith in 1830, the religion and its beliefs have had a long, complex history in the United States.

Mormons embrace the central teachings of Christianity, such as the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, his sinless life, his crucifixion, and his resurrection. Along with the central teachings, they also believe in continuing revelation and have an open canon of scripture which includes the Bible, the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price. Mormons believe that Christ’s church was restored to the earth through Smith and believe in continuing modern revelation, which is the essence of their faith.

Mormons also have a unique set of cultural values, customs and traditions which are often distinct from those of other Christian denominations. For example, Mormons actively practice and encourage family values, including having children, marrying and raising families, and taking care to stay near their extended family. They also abstain from alcohol, tobacco, coffee, and drugs, and are encouraged to live modestly, often setting aside a portion of their income for charitable donations.

Mormons emphasize the importance of missionary work, with over 70,000 missions worldwide, and encourage their members to be service-minded and selfless. They also participate in humanitarian and missionary efforts and clean-up programs that help to ameliorate the plight of the poor and destitute in different parts of the world.

Though Mormons share many similar beliefs and practices with other Christian denominations, they hold to some distinguishing doctrines that set them apart, such as the doctrine of plurality of Gods, baptism and confirmation by priesthood authority, and belief in a celestial marriage and eternal families.

In recent years, the LDS church has made strides in consulting with various denominations, developing more interfaith dialogue to better understand and foster cooperation and peace. As a result, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has become a respected and accepted part of the United States’ religious landscape.
